Simple Squamous Epithelium Definition

Simple squamous epithelium is a single sheet of cells joined together by flat cells called squamous cells that line the serous cavities of bodies and the lumen of blood vessels. The epithelia the cells are flattened and their height being very little as compared to their width. Simple squamous epithelial tissue functions largely in the facilitation of movement of molecules across it to the underlying tissues.

Simple Squamous Epithelium Description of Structure

Simple squamous epithelial tissue is made up of a single layer of thin cells, whereby the cell nuclei are the thickest and most visible structures. The thin cells of simple squamous epithelial tissue often exhibit transcytosis. The cytoplasm of cells in simple epithelium forms only a thin layer and their nuclei cause the bulging of the cell surfaces. The surface view of the simple squamous epithelium shows the cells have polygonal outlines that interlock with those of adjoining cells at occluding junctions these junctions are thus tightly sealed and blocking the passage of substances between the cells, only allowing passage of substances through the cells.

Where is Simple Squamous Epithelium Found?

The simple squamous epithelial tissue is generally found in areas of the body that require quick transport of molecules across cytoplasm or protection in many layers.

Simple Squamous Epithelium Location

  1. Lining of blood vessels such as the Endothelium
  2. Inner lining of the heart as the Endocardium
  3. Outer lining of the heart as the Pericardium
  4. Outer covering of the lung as the Pleura
  5. Covering of the abdominal contents as the Peritoneum
  6. It is found in some parts of the renal tubules such as the thin segment of loop of Henle
  7. Parietal layer of Bowmans capsule
  8. Rete testis
  9. Pulmonary alveoli
  10. The posterior corneal epithelium known as the Corneal endothelium
  11. Simple squamous epithelial tissue is also found in some parts of the internal ear

Together, the simple squamous epithelium lining the pleural, pericardial and peritoneal cavities are given the special name Mesothelium.

Simple Squamous Epithelium Function

The simple squamous epithelium mainly functions in rapid exchange of molecules or protection in many layers.
