How to make churros
1) Making the churros dough
- To a saucepan, add 1/2 cup of water, 1/2 cup of milk, 6 tbsp of butter, 1/2 tsp of salt, and 2 tbsp of sugar.
- Allow the butter to melt completely and bring to a boil.
- Turn off the heat and then add the flour and stir to combine until you have a smooth dough. Cook the dough for 1 minute while stirring it continuously and then bring it down from the stovetop.
- Using an electric hand mixer, beat the flour to help cool it down.
- Next, break 3 eggs and add 1 at a time. Mix the egg and the dough using the hand mixer until you have added the whole eggs to the dough.
- For flavoring, go in with 1 tsp of vanilla extract and mix again to combine. You can use a spatula to scrape the sides of the mixing bowl while mixing with the electric mixer to ensure all the ingredients are well combined.
- Scoop the churros dough into your piping bag with a star-shaped nozzle.
2) Deep Frying
- Add the frying oil to your pan. Allow it to heat up to a temperature of 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Pipe 6 inches of the churros dough into the hot oil, cut them using a pair of scissors. Do not overcrowd the pan.
- Fry one side of the churro for 1 minute 30 seconds or until golden brown in color. Flip over to the other side and fry for 1 minute. You can use wooden skewers for flipping the fried churros or your frying spoon, whichever you like best.
- Once all the sides of the churros are golden brown, remove them from the oil and drain them on a paper towel. Do this until you are done with all the dough.
Coating the churros in cinnamon sugar
Add the churros to a mixing bowl and sprinkle the cinnamon sugar over them. You can toast with a spatula or your clean hands and then remove them to a clean plate.
Tips on making churros at home
- Ensure the oil is exactly at 350 degrees Fahrenheit, you can use a thermometer to check this. Too much heat makes the churros turn dark brown quickly and they may get burnt. When the oil is not hot, the churro becomes soggy and oily.
- The dough should be glossy, silky, and smooth before you pipe it. It shouldn’t be too runny or too firm.
- When the churros are still hot, the sugar sticks better than when they are cold.
